The bowl season means wading through some chafe in the pre-Christmas Day schedule (and post Dec. 25th for that matter), but amongst the chum there are always a few games worth paying attention to. One that I’ve circled as a betting opportunity is the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on December 22nd, featuring a matchup between a couple of mid-tier Div 1 schools – the Central Michigan Chippewas and the Wyoming Cowboys.
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Wyoming vs. Central Michigan Pick
The big storyline heading in surrounds Wyoming QB Josh Allen’s “will he, or won’t he” status. The Cowboys have stumbled without him behind center, managing a paltry 24 points over their last two games without him. There is good news for Wyoming, as it’s looking like he’ll be back, for what will be his final college game before heading to the NFL draft.
Despite a rocky start to their season, Central Michigan has surged in the second half, winning five straight over Ball State, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Northern Illinois, booking this bowl game berth.
The steady improvement can be seen on both sides of the ball. QB Shane Morris had a very solid start in that last win, tossing for 247 yards with three TDs vs. Northern Illinois. And the offense has now booked 31 points or more in their last five games.
Even with Josh Allen back for Wyoming, I like the way the Chippewas match up in this one. I see them having success moving the ball and being able to handle what Allen and co. throw at them on defense.
I’ll take the small underdog to get the straight up win.
Line: Wyoming Cowboys -1
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Pick: Central Michigan +1
