The next
time you hear someone disrespect the Pac-10, simply utter these three letters,
"U-S-C!"
It was
supposed to be a great game; Primetime TV, two of college football's most
storied programs, but when all was said and done, the USC Trojans, much to the
delight of the home crowd, hammered the Ohio State Buckeyes by a final of 35-3,
seriously jeopardizing OSU's chances of making a third trip to the BCS title
game...hey, who are we kidding, it basically ended their BCS title game hopes.
The
Buckeyes started the week off listed as 10-point underdogs, then by 10.5-points
and finally 11-point underdogs before game time.
"Beanie"
Wells was dressed in civvies, USC proved to be head and shoulders above Ohio State
and solidified their position atop the polls-the Buckeyes meanwhile dropped all
the way down to 13th in the AP and 14th in the USA Today
polls.
Now, if
someone comes up to you and disrespects the Big 10, you can just nod in
agreement.

What was
with all the offseason excitement from Michigan
fans about Rich Rodriguez bolting from West Virginia
to Ann Arbor?
The
Wolverines are 1-2 and 0-3 against the spread, their latest defeat coming at
the hands of the upstart (?) Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Listed at
+1, the Wolverines were beaten soundly by a final of 35-17.
If you
wagered on the Georgia Bulldogs (-7) and South Carolina Gamecocks game on
Saturday we have good news, you didn't lose...but you didn't win either.
The
Bulldogs avoided an upset by grabbing two turnovers in the fourth, including a
Mike Davis fumble before he dove into the endzone for what would have been a
game tying TD; Georgia came away with a 14-7 win and dropped from second to
third in both the AP and USA Today polls.
While all
the hype surrounded OSU-USC going into the weekend, there was also Week 2 of
the NFL to look forward to.
The Matt
Cassel temp era began in New England and it
wasn't that bad a debut.
Cassel
finished the game 16/23 for 165 yards and the Patriots came away with a 19-10
victory over the New York Jets; a final score that enabled the Pats to cover as
1-point road faves.
Shame on
all of you in Green Bay
who doubted Aaron Rodgers; he's gone 2-0 both SU and ATS.
Most
recently, the Packers went into Detroit
and covered as 3-point road favorites in a 48-25 win.
If the New
England Patriots should stumble, the Buffalo Bills might just be the team to
pass them for the AFC East title.
The Bills
covered as 4-point road underdogs in the humidity and heat in Jacksonville, beating the Jaguars 20-16. Buffalo is tied with New England
for the AFC East division lead at 2-0.
Charger
bettors are likely still getting over the stinging feeling from the beat they
took Sunday afternoon. Most bettors laid 1-point on San Diego and would have been cheering madly
as their team fell on an apparent Jay Cutler fumble late in the game, sealing
the win. But hang on, a bad call by referee Ed Hochuli turned that fumble into
an incomplete pass, giving the ball back to the Broncos. You know the rest...the
Broncos score a TD to get within one-point, then eschew the one-point convert
to try and win in regulation with a two-point conversion attempt...which they
execute. Denver wins by one, sending San Diego to an 0-2 start.
And it all
ended with a great Monday nighter that saw the Cowboys and Eagles trade blows
all game. The Cowboys scored last, winning straight up but not winning by
enough to cash tickets for their backers. Dallas
was a 6.5-point favorite, but only won by four.
"Over"
bettors were celebrating at half-time, as this clash produced 54 points in the
first two quarters.

On the
diamond, the Chicago Cubs seem to be warming up after a cold streak. The NL
Central leaders have won three straight games punctuated with a no-hitter on
Sunday against the Houston Astros, courtesy of Carlos Zambrano.
Zambrano
had been suffering from an inflamed right rotator cuff but looked good in his
return, going the distance and striking out 10.
