Handicapping Tips – Sports Betting Part I

  • by

This is the first in a series of betting tips put together by real handicappers who work hard every day trying to make winning picks

Gambling is a marathon, not a sprint and it pays to have a good strategy in place for the long season ahead

The EveryEdge sports betting forum has long been recognized as an industry leader for bettors who like to share information and post their top plays of the night. Most members at EveryEdge check their ego at the door and realize that in the daily grind that picking winners, it helps to have a strong support team when the going gets tough.

At a recent ‘Choir Practice,’ the infamous annual gathering for Northwest players, Og shared a list of the points had compiled through the years to help keep the ship heading in the right direction. Some of the content was from his own experience; some was another member and good friend, Side Show Bob. And of course there are some points on this list that other EE members shared with the board since 2001 that Og felt was too valuable to not write down.

DO’s AND DON’Ts OF SUCCESSFUL SPORTS GAMBLING

(Remember this is serious. Treat it like you are investing)

DO be disciplined. Keep things under control and try to analyze like a robot, without an emotional stake in it. Don’t get too high, don’t get too low. You can celebrate when you cash out and have the money in your hands.

DO be patient! Every play is not going to win but remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. Every play should be a ‘last chance’ mentality – There are NO ‘throw away’ plays.

DO set a win/loss margin or goal for the week and stick to it. Money management is key and even if you are up $5,000 treat every bet like it’s your last $100. If you hit your goal by Wednesday, stop betting for the week or if you have to satisfy the action junkie craving, maybe just play a small parlay or two.

DO NOT go below your bottom line if you hit it. Just like a ‘Winnings’ goal there should be a set ‘Loss Margin’ in place and if you hit it, you can’t play until next week. It sucks being “cut off” at bar (or sportsbook) but hopefully the experience helps prevent you from finding yourself in that position again.

There are plenty more tips to come and we won’t use the ‘L word’ but it’s a high-percentage play that you can probably find more great game analysis right now in the EE sports betting forum. Follow EveryEdge on Twitter, too, and help build the network of bettors just like you who share a common goal.
