I’ve been sitting here watching the NHL Trade deadline coverage on
TSN and checking out the Trade thread in the Everyedge forum.
It’s been quite a day, with some newsworthy moves. I made a play early
in the day on the Edmonton Oilers (Joe C and a few others liked the set
up), only to hear that Ryan Smyth, the Oiler captain, was dealt at the
last minute. I’m letting my play ride and we’ll see how it goes.
I’m interested to see how Bertuzzi does in Detroit.
March Madness is just over the horizon, as the college game heats
up. This week, and last weekend, I have to admit I didn’t make one
single NCAA hoops wager…I’m not sure why, but my attention was other
places, and I didn’t see anything that really grabbed my attention. I
do see that changing this coming weekend.
Having a look around, here are some thoughts from last week in the gaming industry:
Kenseth Rocks
I’m definitely starting to enjoy
this Nascar betting, even though this weekend I didn’t have the same
success as two weeks ago in the Daytona 500. Kenseth’s win was a good
thing, as I had him in matchups, but I played a few others that didn’t
work out as well, so it was the smallest of profits in the bank when
the checkered flag dropped.
There has been tons of great info in the Nascar threads the last two
weeks. This is a sport I’m looking forward to wagering on all summer,
picking my spots, being conservative and following the advice of the
group on the boards.
Here’s last week’s main thread:

Ronca Also Rocks
The Accenture Golf match play
served up some entertaining, and profitable action, particularly over
the first few days. I don’t follow golf close enough to feel good about
handicapping the matchups, but the posting forum was loaded with great
picks throughout the tournament.
I was a little surprised at the amount of attention this event
received, as there were several threads a day, with plenty of input and
views for each one. There was a great info by several posters, but I
personally locked on to one poster and followed his plays over the
tourney…and ended up with a nice profit after the final put was sunk.
Poster Ronca was absolutely dialed in, picking up something like 30
units from the Match Play. I didn’t follow all his plays, but I did
tail enough of his plays to be up just over nine units myself.
Great job Ronca…a big thanks.
Barney Frank – Friend To The Bettor
Congressman Barney Frank’s name was on many people’s lips within the
gaming industry last week, as rumours swirled that his office was going
to spearhead a movement to overturn (or bring in a two-year amnesty) of
the recently passed Unlawful Internet Gaming Act (UIGEA). Love him or
hate him, Barney has always been of the opinion that government should
let adults choose what they spend their money on, as long as it doesn’t
hurt others. Last March, Frank said: 'Adults are entitled to do with
their money what they want to do.'
Although Frank’s office wouldn’t confirm anything, his position as the
Democrat chairman of the House Financial Services Committee puts him in
a powerful spot related to this specific legislation.
Oscar Night
Did anyone watch the Oscars? Would you admit it if you did?
I did (required viewing with the girlfriend), and I had a handful of
wagers going (as I have the last couple of years) to keep me
interested. The only two movies of note that I had seen were “The
Departed” and “Little Miss Sunshine”.
I picked up a win with the mild upset in the Best Supporting Actor
category. I had Alan Arkin to get the nod over Eddie Murphy, as I wrote
in last week’s article. The rest of the picks basically broke even.
As is usually the case though in this event, the favorites ruled the
night, as those who were pegged to win, pretty much did win. It makes
it a difficult entertainment event to make anything but fun plays on,
as you don’t want to be laying the big juice you’re asked to for any of
the favorites.
Hockey Talk
As I mentioned above, the hockey
world was hopping on Tuesday, with the trade deadline coming and going.
There were some major moves, as some teams got better, and some looked
ahead to next year (or in Phoenix’s case, 2009).
The Hockey Forum www.everyedge.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=7 is following everything, handicapping the moves and making picks based on the changes.
Have a look.
