Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers Pick 2017
NFL Preseason Week One; Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 8:00pm EST
Line: Green Bay -2
The Packers host the Philadelphia Eagles at Lambeau to kick-off their 2017 pre-season schedule. While Green Bay head into the new campaign eyeing a Super Bowl run, as usual, the expectations for the Eagles are not quite as lofty.
But there is real optimism in the City of Brotherly Love as they break camp. They’ve added a few new pieces that will help, notably Alshon Jeffrey arrived to give Carson Wentz a top-tier target on the outside.
Wentz showed a lot of potential as a rookie last season, with all the predictable ups and downs. But there is a foundation to build on and we should see him take a big step forward in 2017.
All that is well and good when looking forward to the regular season…but this is the pre-season, where Wentz’s progress and new weapons are only a fraction of the handicapping process. I’m much more interested in backup QBs Nick Foles and Matt McGloin.
These two have a nice edge over the Packers’ QB depth chart, sporting Brett Hundley, Joe Callahan and Taysom Hill. Backup QB play, along with motivation to actually try and win a pre-season game and a coach’s traditional approach to exhibition games are always very high on my list of handicapping factors for these games.
I give an edge to the Eagles in all three categories.
We’re going to see very little if anything at all of Aaron Rodgers and for that matter, the starters on both sides of the ball. So the outcome will largely depend on the depth chart for both teams. I’ll take Foles and third-stringer McGloin in their matchups.
McGloin isn’t like most third-string quarterbacks you’ll see this pre-season. He’s been a starter in the league and while that was a while ago (back in 2013 with Oakland), he’s been in the league this entire time.
I do have a little concern around Foles, who missed a couple of practices with soreness in his elbow. If they sit him for this matchup, I’ll pass on the play. But if Foles is ready to lead a few series, I’ll be making a play on an Eagles team, despite it being only a pre-season game, that is looking to start the year with a win and the fact it will come vs. the Packers (who beat them last November) at Lambeau, is a nice bonus.
NFL Pick: I’m taking Philly +2.
