WTA US Open 2015 Preview – Will we see Serena Williams complete the Serena Slam?

2015 WTA US Open Preview

While there has not been a repeat winner of the Men’s US Open tournament since 2008 things have been very different in the WTA competition. World number one Serena Williams has taken victory at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York for each of the last three years – bringing her US Open victories to six – and if she can take her fourth successive title then she’ll complete a Grand Slam of Grand Slam events following wins at the Australian and French Opens as well as Wimbledon.

Online sportsbook Unibet.com believe that she can as they make the American the massive favourite to take the title on home soil, and we’re looking at her chances as well as a number of other contenders in the WTA US Open 2015 Preview betting market.

Serena Williams – 1.80 to win the 2015 WTA US Open in the Unibet Sportsbook.

The odds-on favourite to win the US Open for a seventh time has had an outstanding year so far with three Grand Slam titles and a 48-2 record from 50 matches. Since taking the title in Wimbledon she has made the final four in Toronto at the Rogers Cup, losing to Belinda Bencic over three sets, before defeating world number two Simona Halep at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati to take her fifth title of the season. She comes into the 2015 WTA US Open as the class of the field and with plenty of confidence too, but will she complete the Serena Slam on home soil?

Victoria Azarenka – 9.50 to take the US Open title with Unibet.

Although she has slipped world number 20 from her former position of top of the WTA rankings in 2012 Unibet.com make the Belarusian the second favourite to take this title. However, after defeat to Serena at the quarter final stage at Wimbledon she has fallen at the last 16 stage in both Toronto and Cincinnati, although she did retire in the second set of her final match in the latter tournament after impressing. She has also made the final in two of the last three US Open tournaments, so can she make it three from four this year?

Simona Halep – 10.00 for victory at the 2015 WTA US Open at Unibet.com.

The world number two Halep is in fine form this year having taken three titles and after she was eliminated at the first round at Wimbledon she has shown some even better form in the build up to this event at Flushing Meadows. Final appearances in Toronto and Cincinnati, where she retired and was beaten by Serena, show that she is sure to break her record of only ever having reached the fourth round in New York this year. The fact that she is second in the world means that she’ll avoid Serena Williams until the final too and this gives her a massive boost at winning her first Grand Slam event too.

Dark Horses:

Outside of the top three in the 2015 WTA US Open betting market there are very few challengers to the title, but Maria Sharapova (18.00) and Belinda Bencic (25.00) are the two most favoured. Sharapova won this title in 2006 but has managed to pass the fourth round once since then, but after reaching the final and semi final stages at the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year she stands a good chance at making the final stages of the US Open this time around despite not playing since that tournament in London.

Bencic’s best Grand Slam performance came at Flushing Meadows last year as the 18 year old made the quarter finals and after winning tournaments in Eastbourne and Toronto this year the youngster will be confident on her return to the final Grand Slam of the year. However, we feel that this year is likely to come too soon for the up-and-coming Swiss star to win a Grand Slam.

Final Thoughts:

With Serena Williams having such great records both this year and at Flushing Meadows in general, plus dominant head-to-head records against each and every other player on the WTA tour, we cannot see anything but a 22nd Grand Slam title, a seventh US Open title and a completion of the Grand Slam in 2015 for Williams.

Also, we feel that if you find each way betting available that you back Simona Halep each way as the Romanian offers plenty of value at reaching the final too.
