TREND SETTER: WEEK 5 LOOK-AHEAD – Pick Sixty Sports
Tom Brady is back in the mix this week and it couldn’t come a moment too soon for a Patriots team reeling off a divisional shutout loss to Buffalo. Actually, the Pats are 3-1 and the only who should really be concerned about Sunday’s 16-0 loss to the Bills is Cleveland.
The Browns have given scares to Miami and Washington in recent weeks but they are 10-point dogs against the Pats. Since league realignment in 2002, the record for winless double-digit home dogs (beyond Week 1) is 1-13 SU and 4-10 ATS. 11 of those 14 games went over the total including the past five in a row since 2011. Scoring averages favor the road chalk 36-16 and Bill Belichick has won five of his past six against his former team, going 5-1 O/U.
In non-conference matchups, keep your eye on the line movement this week between the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts (-4.5 and O/U 47.5). The sports database record since 1989 for home faves off a fave loss (Colts) against teams that are off a home dog win (Bears) is 49-11 SU and 34-26 ATS (57-percent). When totals were 43 or more, the record improves to 14-7 ATS with scoring averages of 30-17, right inline with this posted total.
The twist here is that Indianapolis are fresh off a trip to London, England and normally that’s automatic grounds for a bye week. It obviously didn’t fit the league’s scheduling format this year and how Indy reacts is anyone’s guess but chances are, this entire 53-man roster will not be up to full capacity. If you think Chicago’s D can benefit from this advantage over Andrew Luck, consider playing the under. If you feel like it’s the Bear offense that has an advantage here over a 28th ranked Indy D, who could be suffering from jet lag, consider taking the points.
