Hastings Park Racecourse has been the focal point of horse racing in the Lower Mainland of BC for over 100 years, but this is the first time they’ve had a direct link to a Kentucky Derby winner, let alone a Triple Crown bid.
When jockey Mario Gutierrez rode I’ll Have Another to a thrilling victory in the 2012 Kentucky Derby it shone a spotlight on the Vancouver track, as the 25-year old cut his teeth over a six-year period at Hastings Park.
The exposure was enormous, as the track was referred to over and over again on the national broadcast, sending people all over the world to Google and Twitter seeking out more information about this quaint gem snuggled against the water and mountains in East Vancouver.
Gutierrez continued the good fortune for Hastings when he followed up that Derby win with a brilliant run at the Preakness, setting up a rare shot at the Triple Crown.
Now I’ll Have Another and and Gutierrez have one final challenge in front of them as they chase history. Hastings Park are expecting a record crowd at the track for the Belmont on June 9th.
