Week 3, Thursday Night Football Picks: Giants at Panthers

  • by

The Giants were on the verge of a 0-2 record last week before Eli Manning hit the gas in the second-half. Carolina has lost three of four to the men in blue, including two home games, but Cam Newton is one win away from his first winning record as a pro as Week 3 NFL betting begins!

Manning completed 31 of 51 passes for 510 yards against Tampa including 295 yards in a second-half rally

New York opened as a small favorite with Sunday night’s NFL odds but by Wednesday, Carolina was listed at -2 at sportsbooks as Cam Newton gets set for his NFL primetime debut. The current line is -2.5 or -3 with a total of 49.5.

The Giants will be playing without the services of RB Ahmad Bradshaw (neck), WR Hakeem Nicks (foot), WR Dominik Hixon (concussion) and offensive lineman David Diehl (knee) but with as of Thursday afternoon, online betting action is split down the middle.

CHANGE OF PLANS

Despite injuries, New York’s offensive line looked as good during the second-half against Tampa Bay as they have all summer and that was against a Bucs pass rush that bowled over these Panthers in Week 1. Manning has complete control of this offense and once he had a chance to make adjustments, instincts that make him one of the league’s top QBs took over.

WR Ramses Barden will start this game opposite Victor Cruz and with RB Andre Brown in the backfield Manning will need TE Martellus Bennett to be a playmaker. Carolina has struggled against the run this year, giving up 146.5 rushing yards per game and even with personnel changes we expect New York to find ways to move the football.

FOLLOW IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS

The Green Bay Packers could not follow up their 2010-11 title with another Super Bowl win but as defending champs, they did a great job last season padding bettor’s pockets (13-7 ATS).

Green Bay was 10-5 ATS as a favorite and 4-4 ATS laying points away but when the laying less than TD, the Packers were 5-0 straight-up on the road and they covered the spread at a 4-1 rate.

Ironically, their only non-cover was against these Giants in Week 13 when New York was beginning a stretch of eight ATS covers in nine games on the way to Super Bowl XLVI. Since 2002, the Giants are 25-9 ATS away from home when the line is +/-3 points.

NFL PICKS – PRIMETIME

New York’s defense will have a tough task trying to contain Newton but the Giants were one of the best road teams in the league last year and should be up for the challenge. Manning is one of the best fourth quarter generals in the business and getting up to three points, we are calling for a New York win.

Pick: Take the Giants
